Fiordland Weather & Alpine Track Preparation

Fiordland National Park receives up to seven meters of rainfall annually. This incredible precipitation creates thousands of cascading waterfalls, but requires serious preparation.

The Three-Layer System

Weather in the Southern Alps changes rapidly. A sunny morning can transition to freezing rain and high winds at mountain passes within thirty minutes.

• Base Layer: Merino wool or synthetic moisture-wicking thermal top and bottom. Avoid cotton completely.
• Insulation Layer: Lightweight fleece or down jacket for warmth at high elevations.
• Outer Shell: High-grade waterproof jacket with sealed seams and storm hood.

Stream Crossings & Avalanche Awareness

During heavy downpours, mountain streams swell swiftly. Never attempt to cross unbridged rivers if you are unsure of the depth or flow speed. Always carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) when trekking remote multi-day sections.
