Ultimate 14-Day South Island Roadtrip Guide
Published by OpalAotearoa Expedition Team • 8 min read
The South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand holds some of the world's most dramatic geological contrasts — from rugged coastline seal colonies to towering granite peaks and glacial lakes.
Stage 1: Christchurch to Lake Tekapo & Mount Cook
Setting off from Christchurch, head inland across the Canterbury Plains towards Arthur’s Pass or straight south towards Lake Tekapo. The vibrant turquoise color of Tekapo is caused by fine glacial flour suspended in the alpine snowmelt water.
Continue onwards into Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. We highly recommend starting early on the Hooker Valley Track, an accessible 10km return trail crossing suspension bridges with views of towering ice faces.
Stage 2: Wanaka & Queenstown Alpine Hubs
Crossing the Lindis Pass brings you into the Otago region. Spend two nights in Wanaka enjoying lakefront hikes like Mount Iron or Roys Peak before navigating the Crown Range Road down into Queenstown.
"Driving in New Zealand requires patience: roads are narrow, winding, and scenic lookouts will entice you to stop every twenty minutes. Always budget extra time."
Essential Driving Safety Protocol
- Remember that vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road in NZ.
- Single-lane bridges are common; pay close attention to yield signs indicating priority.
- Always check morning road conditions via Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency) during winter and spring.
